UM/UIM Coverage

UM coverage refers to Uninsured Motorist Coverage. In Philadelphia, allegedly half of all cars are uninsured. If you are injured in a car accident with one of those uninsured cars, under most circumstances you will not be able to recover any money for your injuries unless you have a source of uninsured motorist coverage, which can come from the vehicle you are occupying, your own car insurance policy or a family members policy living in your household. Uninsured Motorist Coverage is extremely important protection for you and your family members living with you. People with uninsured motorist coverage have an opportunity to recover money for their injuries even if the responsible car is uninsured. People without uninsured motorist coverage usually can't get any money for their injuries if the responsible car is uninsured. But remember, limited tort on your own auto policy will still require a showing of a permanent injury or serious impairment to recover money under the Uninsured Motorist portion of your policy. In other words, even if you have uninsured motorist coverage on your policy, you also need full tort to best protect your right to recover money if you are involved in a car accident with an uninsured car. Demand full tort and uninsured motorist coverage from your insurance company or agent, and make sure that you have stacking with your uninsured motorist coverage. Stacking may potentially give you multiple levels of uninsured motorist coverage and allow you to recover more money for you injuries.

In Pennsylvania, the law only require someone to have $15,000.00 in liability coverage. That is the minimum insurance required in Pennsylvania. As stated earlier, fifty percent (50%) or more of all registered cars in Philadelphia allegedly don't have any insurance at all. Of the fifty percent (50%) that are insured, many of them only have the minimum of $15,000.00 in coverage required under Pennsylvania law. If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident with someone who carries only the $15,000.00 minimum amount, what do you do if your claim is worth more than that? You typically can't do anything to get any more money for you injuries unless you have a source of underinsured motorist coverage. If the person causing the accident is underinsured (i.e. does not have enough insurance to compensate you for you injuries) then underinsured motorist coverage will provide you with another source of recovering money for your injuries. Make sure you have stacking with your underinsured motorist coverage. Stacking may potentially give you multiple levels of underinsured motorist coverage.
