Maritime & Longshoreman Claims

Since 1958, the lawyers at Fine and Staud have zealously represented workers who have maritime and longshoreman claims, and we are one of the few law firms in the Philadelphia area that represents longshoremen and seamen injured in maritime accidents. In addition, Attorney Louis S. Fine, Esquire is a Proctor in Admiralty. When you have a maritime or longshoreman claim, including claims under the Jones Act or the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act, contact the attorneys at Fine and Staud.

Under the Jones Act, an injured seaman can sue his employer for damages, including pain and suffering, past and future wage losses, and medical expenses based upon negligence or a claim that the vessel he was working on was not seaworthy when he was injured. We also represent workers injured on offshore oil rigs and other similar structures.

The Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act generally pertains to longshoremen, shipyard workers and workers on fixed platforms. Longshore Act claims are similar to workers' compensation claims, because employers must pay wage losses and medical expenses. Like traditional workers' compensation claims, an injured longshoreman who receives benefits under the Longshore Act may also file a negligence claim and collect damages from any third parties responsible for his injuries if he can prove that the third party was negligent.

The attorneys at Fine and Staud have been aggressively handling maritime and longshoreman claims under the Jones Act and Longshore Act, representing longshoremen injured in the ports of Philadelphia, Delaware and South Jersey, for nearly 50 years. When Holt Cargo Systems, Inc. and related Holt companies declared bankruptcy in and around 2002, Fine and Staud was the only Philadelphia-area law firm to fight through the bankruptcy issues to achieve successful outcomes for clients. Fine and Staud did not give up fighting for injured longshore clients because of the bankruptcy. With the assistance of bankruptcy counsel in Delaware, the attorneys at Fine and Staud fought through the bankruptcy issues successfully to obtain settlements for many clients.

Fine and Stuad also represents clients injured on cruise ships and pleasure boats.

During the last decade, the attorneys at Fine and Staud have obtained multiple million dollar and near million dollar settlements and awards for injured longshoremen.*

As always, at Fine and Staud, Clients Pay No Fees and No Costs Unless a Recovery is Made.
